My Story

I've set myself a really tough challenge to run the 2023 Great North Run and I'm delighted to be doing it in support of Family Rights Group.

The charity do amazing work supporting parents and kinship carers whose children are in need, at risk or in the care system. Their work has become even more crucial since the pandemic and due to rising child poverty.

In 2018, I was proud to work with them to set up a Parliamentary Taskforce to campaign for better support for kinship carers. These are relatives or friends, often grandparents, who step in to raise children who cannot remain at home. They often face a lot of challenges and do so with little if any support. The North East has one of the highest rates of kinship care in the country.

Family Rights Group also run a free national advice service for families and a brilliant programme called Lifelong Links which helps children in care reconnect with those who love them. Find out more

I hope to do them proud and raise as much as I can to support the amazing stuff they do.
